Baby Shower Ideas: And the Retail Price of that Rattle is….

Whenever people come to me for baby shower ideas they usually want help with baby shower games.  We’ve all been to showers where we got the mixed up words like: “prseaid” and were asked to figure out that it really was “diapers” for a prize.  I’m certainly not going to down a game I still play in bed when I can’t sleep, but I think that most of the people who want some help with ideas are looking for something a bit beyond the usual.

For the record my favorite baby shower game ever played at a friend’s shower (and this actually went along with a whole game show baby shower idea) was a version of The Price is Right.  This is such an easy game to set up and depend how far you take it (and they took it the whole way) can be a super fun game for a shower or party. For other fun Baby Shower Ideas read a fun article about throwing a Disney Baby Shower.

Baby Shower Ideas- Price is Right

To do it right you may want to download the Price is Right theme music to play in the background like my friend’s did—it makes it that much more fun to play.  Set up a table that is long enough to have 3-4 people behind it.  Hand everyone large sized postcards and a sharpie.  The rules are just like the television show.  They must guess the price of a baby item without going over it.  The closest price wins.  Eventually, you can weed down the “contestants” for the big prize.  My friends skipped the whole wheel and went straight to the showcase showdown for the final 2-4 participants.  By the time we were finished with the game everyone was smiling and laughing, it was an unusual but fun baby shower game.

This is just one (great) idea for baby shower games, but it does give you a starting point to get creative.  For example, what game show or board game do you enjoy the most?  Take that game and figure out how to apply it to baby shower ideas that will work for your shower.

As always, we’d love if you’d share those baby shower ideas here with the rest of us.

You’ve played a baby shower names game, so why not dedicate a shower to the theme of baby names.

One the most important tasks of expectant parents is to determine their baby’s name. The actual meaning of the baby name , family names, religious influences, popularity, and uniqueness…these are all factors that play into the baby name choice. Then why should you not have fun with it?

If the expectant parents know the baby’s gender then find all kinds of names related to the gender. Print out these baby names and decorate each of the printouts with glitter or stickers to decorate the room. Childrens’ wooden blocks with letters can be placed in different locations around the room and then guests can see how many different names can be created from each set.

Where to search for the baby shower names

The social security administration allows you to search popular baby names for any given year after 1879. This information is great for developing a top 5 baby names for any given year type of game. Players can choose the top 5 names from the list of 10 to see if they guess correctly. Baby name scramble is another fun team game for baby shower guests.

If a name hasn’t been picked yet for the baby, you can provide the parents-to-be with a great source of inspiration that’s also a nice memento of the shower. Buy a cute notebook and pass it around to all the guests. Have them enter ideas for boys’ or girls’ names, along with any notes they may want to share about why they like that name.

Fun Baby Shower Game

Looking for a fun baby shower game for your guests? A fun baby shower game that we found is a baby shower version of Mad Libs. The object of Mad Libs is to produce a humorous story by using word substitutions. Word descriptions are followed by blank spaces. Players fill in these blank spaces with words that match the descriptions. Most word descriptions are simple parts of speech, like “noun”, “verb”, “adjective”, etc. When complete the story will be funny, crazy, ridiculous or just plain dumb. You can never tell till the story is read back.

Mad Lib games can revolve around the theme of the party. Create a story about the parents-to-be finding out they are pregnant, or write one about the mom-to-be informing her partner that she is expecting a baby. Create an amusing story about a woman’s water breaking, her labor at the hospital, her husband’s reaction as he witnesses the birth of the baby, etc. Numbers that can be inserted into the blanks can be particularly amusing. For example, if you put a blank beside baby’s weight and/or height, a number like 40 or 80 will be hilarious when read aloud. Divide into teams or play as one group. You’ll need one copy of the fill in sheet and one copy of the story sheet for each team.

Give a copy of the list to each guest and ask them to conduct a purse scavenger hunt. Set a timer and only allow a few minutes for this baby shower game. The one with the most items is the winner. Be creative with your list, the game is more fun the more outrageous the items are on the list.
